Acrylic Painting: Shipping Crane

Shipping Crane (2011)
Acrylic on Canvas

The start of the industrial revolution was awash with breakthrough technology leading to economic development. The technology was crude and inefficient. The crane is an iconic symbol of such a revolution, being structures artificial and visible, they were (and still are) pure statements against nature, a testimony to the sheer power and strength of steel against the elements.
Despite being entirely man made, the crane almost seems like an animal. Fighting its way to survive against nature, it ruins nature in the way of facilitating the waste of carbon resources, causing side effects. It almost has its own will, and a stubborn determination to simply stand off nature, in the concrete dockland that is its habitat.
